PRESS RELEASE – March 2018

‘Brexit is already having a significant effect on the West Suffolk Hospital’ says Bury St Edmunds resident and pro-Remain campaigner, John Corrie.

At the annual general meeting of the West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust last September the hospital’s chief executive, Dr Stephen Dunn, reported that in the year prior to the referendum, 15 staff members from EU countries – other than the UK – resigned; but in the year after the referendum, the number of resignations soared to 46, i.e. a three-fold increase.

But there’s nothing unusual about Bury’s experience. John Corrie: ‘This is just a local example of the problems facing the NHS nationally, where there are now 100,000 unfilled vacancies. Who fill these vacancies?’ he asks. ‘Does the government have an answer?’

Mr Corrie is a member Bury St Edmunds Open Britain group and the group was one of the many participant organisations involved during the Easter Counties ‘Let’s stay Together’ day of action
