About
Martyn Bond –
“If you don’t know where you’ve come from, you don’t know where you are going.”
Martyn Bond will enlighten us regarding the original ideas, history and background of the EU, the world’s most successful unique trading zone. Recognising the origins of the EU – aiming to avoid a repeat of the 1930s and 1940s – helps us appreciate this amazing collaborative peace project, in which the sharing of sovereignty between nation states provides greater sovereign power for all.
Martyn Bond was for ten years a visiting Professor of European Politics and Policy at Royal Holloway College, University of London. He is also a Distinguished Senior Fellow at Regent’s University, London, a member of the Advisory Board of the Jean Monnet Centre at the University of Surrey and a Senior Fellow at the Salzburg Global Studies Seminar. He is a Vice-Chairman of the London Press Club and worked as the BBC Berlin Correspondent in the Cold War. He also worked for the European Civil Service both in the Council of Ministers and the European Parliament.
He has published several books on Europe – his latest came out in April this year, entitled: “Hitler’s Cosmopolitan Bastard: Count Richard Coudenhove-Kalergi and His Vision of Europe”.
This is the first English biography of Count Richard Coudenhove-Kalergi, a charismatic aristocrat from Bohemia who dedicated his whole life to the cause of European integration. In 1923 he founded a pro-European political movement, the Pan-Europa Union, to work for a peaceful and democratically united continent. His rival then was Hitler. Times have changed, but many of his challenges are ours today as well.
Please note the Zoom meeting will open with the Introduction from 7.15pm, but Martyn Bond’s talk is due to start at 7.30pm. It will be followed by a Q&A session via Zoom Chat. Feel free to email info@nes4eu.co.uk with your questions in advance.
