Richard Corbett
Dr Richard Corbett CBE first joined the European Movement when he was a student at Oxford, where he coordinated the student “yes” campaign in the 1975 referendum. He remained active in its youth section and from 1979-81 was President of the Europe-wide Jeunesse Europeene Federaliste (JEF).
He was a Member of the European Parliament from 1996 to 2020, except for 2009-2014 when he was a senior member of the cabinet of Herman Van Rompuy, the first full-time long-term President of the European Council. In the Parliament he was for ten years the spokesman on constitutional questions for the Socialist & Democrat Group and was the Parliament’s rapporteur on the Constitutional and Lisbon treaties as well as on revising the parliament’s own internal procedures.
Richard is a former chair of the European Movement and is currently honorary vice-chair.
He has written several academic books on European affairs and was a visiting Professor at the College of Europe.
To counteract untruths about the EU, Richard produced this brilliant site, which is still useful for reminding yourself of the truth about the EU: https://www.richardcorbett.org.uk/category/mythbusters
