We had a special guest speaker at our fortnightly general meeting yesterday. David Gwyther , Head of Nations and Regions for the national campaign group ‘People’s Vote’ came and addressed a packed meeting about the latest news and major shifts in position from both parties. Afterwards, he held a Q&A session, with some great questions coming from many of our members. His indepth knowledge of the whole Brexit situation, the details of what is going on at a grassroots level, and an understanding of People’s Vote’s strategy for the immediate future allowed him to give some answers that provided us all with some clarity over what is a complex issue.
Later, in an email he added, “The People’s Vote is a grassroots led movement made up of thousands of volunteers nationwide who give their time, energy and money to campaign for a brighter future for our country. The People’s Vote campaign would never have made it as far as we have without the incredible work that volunteers have put into the campaign. Through conversations with their neighbours, writing to their local MPs, delivering leaflets, putting on street stalls and joining national marches, local campaign groups like the Suffolk EU Alliance have a played a vital role in the campaign, and continue to do so.
The consensus from members was that his visit was worthwhile, and they felt they’d gained a better understanding of what the next steps are likely to be. Given how many more people came to the meeting than usual, it’s clear we should consider getting in more guest speakers in the future.
We are very grateful to David for giving up a whole evening and travelling up from London to spend the evening with us.
