It was one of those days in February that you dream of during the long winter months, but rarely get: a mild and sunny day. Ipswich town centre was filled with shoppers enjoying the pale winter sunshine as we set up our street stall in the usual location at the bottom of Lloyds Avenue opposite the town hall.
It was a small, but perfectly formed group of four committee members – including our latest recruit, John Dell – and three volunteers, all armed with a smile and a handful of leaflets. With only a month to the big London march, we focused on handing out the new ones that had arrived from People’s Vote only the day before.
We also got out our new-style Brexitometer, asking anyone willing to vote, what type of Brexit – if any – they wanted. While many were too busy to stop, we did coax around 50 locals to put their dots on the board, and as always happens, most voted for either a second referendum or to revoke Article 50.
We also asked a question about the new political group in parliament: the “Independent Group”, asking if they’d vote for them. Many said yes, and quite a few sat on the fence, saying they’d need to know more before making that decision. But it was interesting to see how many were open to the idea. Good news if they really want to get another centrist party going.
After two hours in the unseasonably warm weather, we packed up. All in all, it was hard going, but as always we got lots of smiles from local Remainers happy to see us there. Next stop for our Brexitometer is Southwold on March 9th. Click here for details.
