I have the impression that for the past seventy years or so, Britain was seen as the only large European country which had pretty much retained the borders, the constitution, the political system and the legal system that it had in 1900.

Of course, the same can be said of the Scandinavian countries, of the Benelux countries and of Switzerland, but they are all smaller nations.

The British, like the Scandinavians, the Dutch and the Swiss (but not the Belgians, who are considered eccentric) were therefore seen as quite sensible people, and our way of doing things was held up as a good example by other Europeans.

In the past two and a half years our way of doing things has collapsed and we are trying to fight off a Fascist takeover, disguised as “Brexit”.

“Brexit” stopped being about the EU as soon as the “economic case” for leaving the EU was shown to be nonsense, which happened in the first few months after the famous referendum. Since then, it has just been about nationalism and “identity politics” which is just another polite word for racism. Unfortunately many of our fellow citizens are tempted by all this nonsense.
