Halt the Process and Rethink
by Colin Hopkins
The title of the letter (April 3) from Roger Davies “How about some compromise?” and his comments on the small majority for leave in the referendum are a promising start. However, his suggested compromise appears to be to unite behind our PM who is offering us a choice, as I understand it, between the Brexit deal she negotiates and a hard Brexit (crashing out). This looks like a compromise between the factions within the 52%. Where do the 48% who voted remain “get off”, as it were?
I far prefer the type of compromise suggested by Alastair Forsyth (March 27) and supported by Mr. MG Burt (March 31) based on reform of the EU. At least they recognise that alienating nearly one half of the electorate is not a good idea and something else must be tried. The recent ‘Great Eastern March’ which took place in Ipswich, organised by the Suffolk EU Alliance is testament to the strength of feeling throughout Suffolk (and beyond) that this process should be halted whilst we re-think the whole rationale and process for exiting the EU.
