I’ve just sent the following to Clive Lewis, Jeremy Corbyn, John McDonnell and Kier Starmer:

I was disappointed to see the article in the Guardian this morning describing Len McCluskey’s continued opposition to a People’s Vote. The Conservative led government has been unable to define a path forward because all paths cross some faction’s red line. This is why the withdrawal agreement kicks every important decision down the road and will create a long term destructive limbo.

Labour must not fall into this trap. When the withdrawal agreement is, hopefully, defeated, Labour must take a position. Unless it is able to define a Brexit acceptable to a majority in parliment and to the EU, which seems highly unlikely, it has to support a People’s Vote, if for no other reason than there is no other path forward. If this means crossing Len McCluskey’s red lines then so be it, because failing to do so will lock Labour into the same permanent destructive indecision as the Conservatives. Mr. McCluskey is also basing his argument on a false premise. A clear majority of Labour voters and an even greater majority of party members voted remain.

Should we have a People’s Vote, Labour must unambiguously support and campaign for remain. All polls now show a clear majority support for another vote and remaining in the EU. The Labour leadership must represent this democratic majority and be bold enough to weather the challenge this will create. If it does not Labour will be failing Britain as much as the Conservatives are now.

Yours sincerely,
