Sign the Letter
by Philip Gough

We the undersigned have all written to our respective MPs Thérèse Coffey (Suffolk Coastal), Peter Aldous (Waveney), Matt Hancock (West Suffolk), Jo Churchill (Bury St Edmunds), Dan Poulter (Central Suffolk and N Ipswich) and James Cartlidge (South Suffolk) concerning Brexit on at least one occasion in the past two years without receiving a meaningful reply and sometimes not even an acknowledgement.

We are convinced that leaving the EU will be very damaging to the prosperity and reputation of the UK and that most, if not all, the promised benefits of leaving will not materialise.

Irrespective of our political beliefs and affiliations, it is our understanding that these MPs represent all their constituents in parliament and we find it deeply disturbing that, despite campaigning for the continued membership of the EU before the referendum, they now support leaving without feeling the need to defend this position.

Involving the ‘will of the people’ will not wash. If such a thing existed it would change on a daily basis and mean different things to different people. Democracy is a process, not an event. At this momentous time in our history it is more important than ever that citizen sand politicians engage in constructive dialogue.

Nothing is solved by dismissing or ignoring the views of people who, through experience, study and deliberation, have come to firmly held positions. Therefore we ask our MPs through the EADT’s letters’ page why not talk to us? Why not listen to us? A narrow majority in an advisory referendum in June 2016, based on rash promises that could not be kept, cannot and will not undermine our determination to continue the debate on the UK’s constructive participation as one of the 28 sovereign nations in the EU.

Philip Gough on behalf of 64 members/supporters of the Suffolk EU Alliance.
