PRESS RELEASE – March 2018

Ref. seua12

Pro-Remain group, Norfolk for Europe, is one of the co-hosts of the ‘Let’s Stay Together’ day of action in Ipswich on March 24. Chair and founder Kate Gott commented: “We have been looking forward to this opportunity for some time and it’s a fantastic way to make an unequivocal statement, particularly alongside so many like-minded folk from across the eastern counties.

“At Norfolk for Europe we are concerned about the impact of Brexit on local jobs and workers’ rights. We have already seen our iconic Norwich brand Colman’s mustard relocate production to mainland Europe and we are concerned that Kettle Foods will go the same way. They have already seen their costs for imports of sunflower oil go up by over £1m and now they are forced to slash workers’ pay and holiday entitlement in order to keep up with competitors. It is clear to see that due to the impact of Brexit and the falling pound the race to the bottom has already begun.

“Talking to local people in recent weeks at our street stalls and public meetings across the county, it has become clear just how many people in Norfolk want to revisit the whole question of our membership of the European Union now that the brutal reality of Brexit is becoming known. It is our democratic right to have a vote on the terms of the Brexit deal and British people, not politicians, should have the final say on what is best for them, their families and their future.”

“Britain’s rightful place is at the heart of Europe. For almost half a century, we have played a leading role in determining the direction in which our continent develops. In a rapidly changing world it is vital that we continue to play a central part in decision-making in partnership with our European allies rather than watching powerlessly from outside.”
